Black History Month 2

Black History Month didn't start off as a month.  In fact, it began in February of 1926 and was called Negro History Week.  Negro History Week was on the second week of February, because it was the birth dates of two prominent men that had greatly influenced  the Black population. They were Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln.

The person behind Negro History Week was Dr. Carter G. Woodson.  A son of two former slaves. He began high school at the age of 20 and went on to college and received his PhD from Harvard! He noticed that history books ignored the roles of Black people and when they were depicted, they were often used in a negative or inferior role in history.  Thus, is the beginning of Negro History Week.  His intentions were to bring attention to the contributions of Black Americans in history!

Thank you Dr. Woodson for all you have done!

Black History Month

In honour of Black History Month I wanted to share a quote from Rosa Parks that I think we all can live by.

"Each person must live their life as a model for others"

Are you living your life as a model for others?

I hope that I am.

I have 3 beautiful children that need me to guide them and show them the way.  My children need me to show them compassion and patience.  My children need me to show acceptance.  My children need me to teach them that the color of their skin does not define who they are.  We have lot's of colors in our family but we're one family.

I want them to love.  To show love.  I want them to be kind and gentle.  I want them to show acceptance and to be accepted.

I hope that I was their model.

I hope that I was a good role model.

I hope that I am a good role model.
